FEMA Awarding $189 Million in Mitigation Projects

26 Jun 2026 3:46 PM | Sara Williams (Administrator)

On June 23, 2026, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) published the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Pre-Disaster Mitigation Congressionally Directed Spending Notice of Funding Opportunity. Through this program, FEMA empowers communities across the country to take decisive, proactive steps to protect their communities from future disasters.

FEMA will award $189 million to support 125 specific mitigation projects across the nation, including six projects in Austin, Beaumont, Bellaire, Gladewater, El Paso County, and Harris County. Only projects specified in the FY 2026 Homeland Security and Further Additional Continuing Appropriations Act are eligible for this funding.

The application deadline is July 22, 2026, by 5 PM Eastern Time. FEMA will review all applications and disburse funding only after confirming that eligibility criteria, such as cost-effectiveness and environment and historic preservation, have been met.

For projects funded through the Pre-Disaster Mitigation program, the cost share is generally 75% federal and 25% non-federal. Small-impoverished communities are eligible for up to 90% federal cost share for their mitigation planning and project subapplications, in accordance with the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act.
