On Thursday, April 9, 2026, the Colorado State University Tropical Weather and Climate Research Tropical Meteorology Project released the first formal 2026 Atlantic Seasonal Hurricane Activity forecast. It predicts the 2026 Atlantic basin hurricane season will have slightly below-average activity with a total of 13 named storms, six hurricanes, and two major hurricanes.

Probabilities for a major (Category 3, 4, or 5) landfalling hurricane along the entire continental US coastline is 32% (the average over the last century is 43%).  Probabilities are slightly higher on the Gulf coast (20%) than the East coast (15%). The probability for at least one major hurricane tracking through the Caribbean is 35% (the average over the last century is 47%). The Project will release its next forecasts on June 10, 2026 and July 8, 2026 and will begin its two-week forecasts on August 5, 2026.
