Highlights from the 2006 EMAT General Membership Meeting

EMAT held its 2006 General Membership Meeting on November 29, 2006, in conjunction with the State Homeland Security Conference in San Antonio. Thank you to everyone in attendance – it was a very productive meeting, with a number of new items coming your way as a result of your membership in EMAT! Here is a quick briefing on items from the meeting:

  1. Elections were held for EMAT Board Members for the years 2007-2008. We welcome the following new members:
    • Region 1 – Sean Hughes, City of North Richland Hills
    • Region 2 – Jamie Galloway, City of Webster
    • Region 3 – Aaron Martinez, Corpus Christi/Nueces County LEPC
    • Region 4 – Pat Patton (re-elected)
    • Region 5 – Walt Kelley (re-elected)
    • Region 6 – Randy Jenkins, City of Cleburne, and Frank Patterson (re-elected)
    • Region 7 – Jeff Johnson, City of Brownsville, and Cliff Rowell, Town of South Padre Island
    • At Large – John Patterson, City of Coppell
    • New Corporate Representative – John Buri, Beck Disaster Recovery, Inc.
    And we would like to extend our thanks to those who are now rotating off of the Board: Karen Adkins, Nim Kidd, Billy Zwerschke, and Carroll Hollingsworth – we very much appreciate your work and dedication! For a full list of the board, check the EMAT website at www.emat-tx.org.
  2. After a proposal and action by the Texas Gulf Coast Emergency Management Association, EMAT voted to accept the membership of TGCEMA in a merger. The action includes establishing a Coastal Issues Committee within EMAT and maintaining TGCEMA’s awards program. Welcome all of the TGCEMA members!
  3. Congratulations to this year’s EMAT Award winners:
    • EMAT Emergency Manager of the Year Award - Jeff D. Braun, Fort Bend County Office of Emergency Management
    • EMAT Excellence in Emergency Management Award - City of Galveston and University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), for their joint shelter hub planning project with the City of Austin
    • EMAT Emergency Management Student Award - Josh Roberts, University of North Texas
    • EMAT Outstanding Media Award - KLUX 89.5, Corpus Christi, for its unique role as the primary radio broadcast medium for emergency management information in Nueces County

  4. Congratulations to two EMAT members who successfully completed their Texas Emergency Manager’s Certification in 2006 – Randy Jenkins, City of Cleburne, and Jenniffier Hawes, Regional Liaison Officer for DPS Region 2A
  5. And finally, we announced our 2006 membership contest winners – first place to Molly McFadden, with a whopping 20 ½ new members, and second place to Christine Jacobs, for bringing 5 brand new members!
